[2012] Nick Edwards - Plekzationz

Since launching his Ekoplekz project a couple of years back, West Country boy Nick Edwards has released records on such esteemed imprints as Mordant Music, Perc Trax, Punch Drunk, Public Information and Further. To celebrate his signing to Peter Rehberg's Editions Mego, Edwards has even ditched the Ekoplekz handle, reverting to his real world name - possibly a gesture of seriousness or a newfound confidence, but also a nod to a self-released cassette he put out as Nick Edwards in 1994, the first public document of his long-standing interest in dub, industrial and toolbox electronics. Still, make no mistake - as its title suggests, Plekzationz is very much an Ekoplekz album, albeit the rangiest and most evolved to date, and it even sounds - dare we say it - definitive.

02 (No) Escape From '79 15:14

[2012] Mark Fell - Sentielle Objectif Actualité

Even before it was revealed that Mark Fell was behind the sensuous, unspooled but strangely disciplined house productions on Editions Mego's Sensate Focus 12" series, one might've guessed that the Sheffield-based artist was responsible, given his prior form deconstructing garage and techno as one half of SND. That said, his approach here differs to the ascetic, rhythm-obsessed approach of SND: the rhythms here are, in fact, the most conventional element, generally pretty rudimentary if still strangely compelling. No, it's Fell's digital synthesis where the real magic lies. The dreamy melodies and uncanny repetitions, not to mention the sheer unctuousness of the sounds employed, make this some of the most accessible, immediate material in the Fell canon, but nonetheless there's the usual rigorous formalism at work across the seen tracks here, all remixes of productions from the previously released SF 12"s.

[2012] Ricardo Donoso - Assimilating the Shadow

Killer album of arpeggiated and refracted synth music somewhere between Emeralds, Jean Michel Jarre, Cluster and Manuel Göttsching. Ricardo Donoso made a very fine impression last year with his debut album of sunrise rave moments, 'Progress Chance'. The label have nabbed his sterling follow-up, 'Assimilating The Shadow', another beautiful suite of tingling arpeggios and rippling rhythmic tactility recalling memories of Goan beach parties and Amazonian raves you never visited. While Ricardo's more recent Perispirit movement with Luke Moldof is more an academic concern, here he finds a finer balance between complex compositional strategies, sacred geometry and trance-like gratification. And that darkly blissful ambiguity is key, reviving a viral sensibility that was once the currency of classic electronica, but has now been largely appropriated and intensified to jaw-breaking degrees by dance substrains like psytrance and progressive house. The labyrinthine elaborations of 'Assimilating The Shadow' sidestep the pitfalls of convention and orthodoxy, instead joining the dots back and forth between Jean Michel Jarre and Speedy J, or Manuel Göttsching and Lorenzo Senni to create a stellar sound for spangled ears.

[NEWS] Andy Stott - Numb

Here’s the first track to be unveiled from probably our most anticipated record left to be released in 2012, Andy Stott’s forthcoming Luxury Problems, out next month on Modern Love. The record has been described as falling “somewhere between Theo Parrish and Sade, but more fucked,” and gorgeous/ghostly album-opener “Numb” hints at a devastatingly beautiful (and relatively accessible) evolution of the imposing, future-primitive grind of his incredible Passed Me By / We Stay Together EPs from last year, thanks in part to the haunting vocals from Stott’s childhood piano teacher Alison Skidmore.

[2012] Thought Broadcast - Emergency Stairway

Following a recent release on the reactivated Olde English Spelling Bee, California artist Ravi Binning lands on Editions Mego. That he's found a place on two such extreme and exacting rosters gives you some hint of the crafty, almost occult power of his junkshop electronic experiments. This is really grotty, lo-fi stuff, rooted in the murk of late 70s industrial, dub and even, reckon Mego, "a twisted form of Aktionism". Though there are several contemporary artists who share Binning's aesthetic orientation, few can be said to go about their business so uncompromisingly - in terms of polish and accessibility, Emergency Stairway makes Ekoplekz sound like Toto by comparison.

[2012] Oneohtrix Point Never / Rene Hell - Split LP

Dan Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, announced earlier this year that he'll release a collaboration with Tim Hecker via Software. Now he's also confirmed a split LP with electronic noise artist Jeff Witscher, aka Rene Hell, set for release via NNA Tapes on September 17 in the UK and September 18 in the U.S. The split follows OPN's 2011 album Replica as well as Hell's 2011 record The Terminal Symphony.

Rene Hell’s B-side is called ‘In 1980 I Was A Blue Square’ – fives pieces of piano, synthesizer and computer generated sounds that juxtapose mid-20th century classical music with modern chaotic electronic composition.

[2012] Vessel - Order Of Noise

In the past trying to pin down Vessel’s constantly evolving sound has never been an easy task, and with the release of his debut album it’s become a whole lot harder. In the past 12 months Vessel, aka, 22 year old Sebastian Gainsborough, has been introducing people to his sound via a series of 12” releases on a number of forward thinking, underground labels with each release confounding the expectations of those trying to get a grasp on what exactly he was doing. Order Of Noise is the culmination of his first exploratory steps as an artist, and the album Tri Angle Record’s believed Vessel was building up to. It signals the arrival of an innovative and intensely unique, young, electronic producer who has developed a sound that still has the potential to confuse and confound, but one that is now identifiable as being very much his own.

Tracklist:
01. Vizar

[NEWS] RA.327 -Vessel

Vessel is poised to release one of the year's most intriguing full-lengths, Order of Noise, through Tri Angle, one of the year's most intriguing imprints.
What's got the young Bristol artist (given name Seb Gainsborough) to this point is an open mind. Leaving aside his various side projects—Panther Modern, Rei, Flexible Ape—his output as Vessel has yielded a bewildering volume of stylistic expressions over the last two years—very often within the same piece of music.

[2012] The Eccentronic Research Council - 1612 Underture

Marvellous concept album commenting on and commemorating the Pendle Witch trials of 1612 in the midst of undue patriotism in the jubilee year. Features the unmistakably Lancastrian enunciation of actress Maxine Peak.
1612 Underture is a 12 chapter sound poem based of the mistreatment and memory of the Pendle Witches who were executed in Lancashire, England, on 20 August 1612; Elizabeth Device, James Device, Alizon Device, Anne Whittle (aka Chattox), Anne Redferne. Jane Bulcock, John Bulcock, Alice Nutter, Katherine Hewitt and Jennet Preston, as well as the accused Alice Grey and Elizabeth Southerns (aka Old Demdike) who died while awaiting trial. Although the nucleus of the project is based on historical events, The Eccentronric Research Council identify an uncanny relevance to our current political and social climate - perhaps things haven't changed so much in 400 years.

[2012] Lv - Sebenza

The South London trio LV's follow-up to last year's accomplished Routes, and their first full-length on Hyperdub, is a trip in every sense. Sonically, Sebenza is strung somewhere between UK funky and South Africa's kwaito, two invigoratingly elastic dance music worlds that draw on a rich and overlapping heritage. Vocally it features turns from three distinctive South African acts, Johannesburg's rapper/producer Spoek Mathambo and Okmalumkoolkat of music/performance art crew Dirty Paraffin along with Cape Town kwaito duo Ruffest. Each taps into, bounces off of, and elevates different elements in LV's music. And lyrically it's laced with a potent mix of languages: Zulu, Xhosa, English, and each MC's idiosyncratic slang. Those junctures and juxtapositions tease a thrillingly new energy into being, one that breeds a deeper infatuation with every lean closer.

[NEWS] FACT Mix 343 - Old Apparatus

The London-based group debuted in 2010, with a release on Mala (of Digital Mystikz fame)’s Deep Medi Musik label. As FACT’s Richard Rossiter explained in said interview, “the fact that it came courtesy of Deep Medi suggested an allegiance to dubstep, but the EP’s four tracks roamed far wider than that, with elements of blunted hip-hop, ghostly R&B, noise, industrial, techno and even post-rock.”
Now, the group have launched their own label, Sullen Tone. As they told FACT, they’re a group that “like to be involved with every part of the process”, and that perfectionist nature shines through not just in their music, artwork and slow emergence from anonymity, but in their mix for FACT, a carefully staggered session of slow guitars, breathless pop, synthesiser experiments and the darker end of dance music. Forest Swords, Belong and more feature.

Tracklist:
01. Old Apparatus – Cauliroot (forthcoming Sullen Tone)
02. Forest Swords – Miarches

[2012] The Durutti Column - Short Stories For Pauline

Vini Reilly’s adventurous post-punk unit have one of the long and knottiest discographies around, but their “lost fourth album” is probably their most mythologized recording. Short Stories For Pauline was originally recorded back in 1983 for Factory Benelux, Factory Records’ Belgian sister label. The album was mothballed after Factory boss Tony Wilson (also serving as the band’s manager at the time) insisted that Reilly produce a full instrumental album in the vein of stately album track ‘Duet’ instead. Reilly obliged, writing 1984′s Without Mercy and letting Short Stories For Pauline slide out of view.
The new release will be the first time that the album has been released in its original form (note: certain tracks have previously cropped up on the occasional compilation, most notably Crépuscule’s Hommage a Marguerite Duras collection). The remastered vinyl edition will arrive with the original FBN 36 catalogue number, and will be strictly limited to 500 copies. The record will also come bundled with a digital download, not to mention fresh artwork from Crépuscule designer Benoit Henneber.

[2012] Mika Vainio - FE3O4 - Magnetite

Mika Vainio, currently based in Berlin, was one half of the minimal electronic duo Pan Sonic from Finland, (with Ilpo Väisänen). Before starting Pan Sonic in the beginning of the 90's, Mika Vainio has played electronics and drums as part of the early Finnish industrial and noise scene. His solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analogue warmth and electronic harshness. Be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno, Vainio is always creating unique, physical sounds. He has released on other labels such as Editions Mego, Wavetrap and Sähkö and he has produced work with, amongst others, Alan Vega of Suicide, Keiji Haino, and Bruce Gilbert. Since 2009 Mika Vainio has contributed to the music for Cindy van Acker's dance pieces... This is his 5th album for Touch, after Onko [Touch # TO:34, 1998], Kajo TO:43, 2000], Sokeiden Maassa Yksisilmäinen on Kuningas (In the Land of the Blind One-Eyed Is King) [TO:54, 2004] and Black Telephone of Matter [Touch # TO:72, 2009].

[2012] Pole - Waldgeschichten 3 [12'']

The third part of Pole's Waldegeschichten series alights first on 'Lurch' - a track aptly named given its slouchy yet swaggering rhythm, the kind of thing you'd more readily expect to hear from a blunted LA hip-hop producer like Sam Baker or Teebs than from Stefan Betke. The pitch-bent synth chords and oddly effective cat-whines too threaten to throw you off the scent, but of course closer inspection leaves you in no doubt that Pole is at work: witness the judiciously applied but ever-present crackle, the immense sub-bass pressure, the insane clarity of the whole thing. 'Moos' on the flip is slice of prime digi-dancehall Pole-style, its Teutonic crispness going hand-in-hand with a well-judged, Jammys-derived Casio roughness. Here the painterly use of squelched synth tones is even more masterful than on 'Lurch' - think Purple Funk by way of Rhythm & Sound - and makes for what is, quite honestly, one of the most complete and compelling tracks that Betke has ever produced.

Tracklist:
01 Lurch 6:36
02 Moos 7:37
