[2012] Aaron Dilloway & Jason Lescalleet - Grapes and Snakes

Grapes and Snakes' is the first collaborative work of two of the most respected American underground experimental/noise artists: Aaron Dilloway and Jason Lescalleet. Using purely analog synths and tape manipulation, they build a foggy psychoacoustic mass that lies somewhere between dynamic yet patiently treated tape-music and industrial howl. Dilloway has been releasing and recording music since the age of 16 and is a former guitarist and tape manipulator for the experimental band Wolf Eyes and also runs the noise record label, record store and mailorder Hanson Records. Jason Lescalleet's soundworld, meanwhile, occupies a space between noise, contemporary composition, and minimal electronics.

[2012] Moon Pool & Dead Band - Human Fly [12'']

Detroit deviants Moonpool & Dead Band hardwire their gutter disco waveforms with all the slime lab atmospherics and sci-fi circuitry scuzz that you might expect (and hope for) from a duo comprised of veteran garage-punk drummer Dave Shettler and Wolf Eye noise lifer Nate Young. Utilizing a swap meet’s worth of crusty synths, sequencers, drum machines, and outmoded FX units, and adhering to a purist’s regimen of “all live + improvised, no overdubs,” MP & DB’s rogue wizard approach to basement beat music has birthed some refreshingly unclassifiable tunnel-rat techno (see their self-titled 12” on Agitated for proof), but Human Fly feels like their unambiguous highlight to date.

Tracklist:
01. Human Fly
02. Jagged Orbit
03. Cyber Rebels

[2012] Afterhours - Sleepwalker [12'']

If NYC is the city that never sleeps, then LA’s the one that never wakes. Deep dawn drives through Los Angeles’ fringier fiber optic thoroughfares reveal a nocturnal wonderland of ghosts, bums, lurkers, vampires, and thugs – every stripe of sleepwalker. Which is an all too apt title for Afterhours’ vinyl debut, after a calendar year of altered state incubation via their live weekly radio transmission, “Field Recordings Of The Afterhours,” broadcast from KCHUNG’s Chinatown basement headquarters. Inspired equally by Mo’ Wax obscurities, sound poetry, “Moments In Love,” anime depictions of neo-futurist Tokyo, and Endtroducing, the EP’s four instrumentals slow-zoom like a surveillance camera through shimmering tunnels, glowing skylines, and empty streets, rich with headphone harmonics and the grey romance of isolation.

Tracklist:
01. Sleepwalker
02. 4AM on the Local 83
03. Salt on the Wound
04. That Dream About 97

[2012] Holy Balm - It's You

Last year’s LA Vampires club-cruise across Australia unearthed a multitude of uplifting experiences (Cairns hippie aerialists, Newcastle hardcore, Melbourne acid sangria, etc), but chief among them was the live actualization of Sydney post-power trio Holy Balm, who slyly gene-splice strands of mutant new wave, freeform house, digital trashcan tribalism, and minimalist pop into something playful, primitive, and splatterpaint-party perfect. After a few micro-limited split tapes and a single 7”, the band finally enlisted the help of Jon Hunter at Magnetic Recording Council Studios to record and mix their debut full-length, resulting in the whacked-out hypercolor majesty of It’s You.

Tracklist:
01 Favourite Sweater [Written-By – Y Pants]
02 Holy Balm Theme
03 Losing Control
04 Phone Song
05 Take It
06 Town Called Hope
07 One And Only

[2012] Meadowlands - Cross-sectional Studies

To say he starts gathering pace would probably be an overstatement, but compared to the sheer ambient delight of his previous stuff, what our man McGregor aka Meadowlands does here on his very excellent new Cross-sectional Studies tape might be considered a slightly new direction, an exploration into sonic territory that is still very much about texture and intricate soundscaping for the sake of pure experimentation, yet that for the first time, as far as I’m informed, also features something I’m inclined to call, until further notice, an actual rhythm section.

The Cross-sectional Studies C-30 is out 14 May 2012 on Portugal’s Exo Tapes. Edition of 20. This edition is currently sold out!

Tracklist:
01. Bamboo Hearts

Following his critically acclaimed debut album on Aurora Borealis, the new Tri-Angle signee, The Haxan Cloak (AKA Bobby Krlic), has quite gracefully buried himself deep into the networks of unsettling electronic music. This Latitudes release is, in essence, Bobby live, but think of it as 'The Haxan Cloak 2.0'.

[2012] Matthew Dear - Beams

Early on in Matthew Dear's Beams— the New York-based artist's fourth full-length, his first since 2010’s shadowy masterpiece Black City— something strange happens. A thick-fingered electric bass gallops in atop a driving backbeat as Dear sneers, "It’s alright to be someone else sometimes." It may be odd to hear former techno-wunderkind Matthew Dear playing rock music, but the manic punk pulse of "Earthforms" is just one facet of Beams’ kaleidoscopic journey. Shot through with equal parts optimism and uneasiness, Beams is the latest transmission from one of pop music's most fascinating creative minds.

01 Her Fantasy
02 Earthforms
03 Headcage
04 Fighting Is Futile
05 Up & Out
06 Overtime
