[2012] Vatican Shadow - September Cell [12'']

Catharsis is a common theme running through all of Dominick Fernow's work. But where Prurient has long afforded him the opportunity to wrench a weight of personal shit off his chest, his recent Vatican Shadow project has, impressively, already expressed more in a far shorter space of time.

[2012] Old Apparatus - Darren [EP]

Old Apparatus are one of strangest, most compelling mutations to emerge from the post-Dubstep fallout of recent years. After early offerings on Deep Medi, and more recently remixing Shangaan Electro, they've decamped to their own label, Sullen Tone, which seems the wisest option for their uncategorised, outsider hybrid of electro-acoustic symphonics, synthesized space/Bass music and fractured folk-pop. With this broad-minded scope they relate an immersive, near-cinematic narrative, sweeping us across stormy strings and elemental bass surges into pastoral bliss zones on 'Zimmer', and on through the broken soul mechanics of the title track, sounding like the experiments of Thom Yorke and Four Tet deemed too dark for release. Deeper in, 'Dealow' displays the sheer percussive prowess which made their eponymous debut such a shocker, conjuring voudoo steppers drums and flickering ghostly voices from the ether, before 'Bodah' extrudes your mind thru dense and claustrophobic electro-acoustics. Together with the artwork, it amounts to a most crucial package for fans of owt from Demdike Stare to The Haxan Cloak, Roly Porter or Emptyset.

[2012] Mika Vainio, Kevin Drumm, Axel Dörner, Lucio Capece - Venexia

The original idea of this project was to allow musicians from different scenes (but who shared common ideas) to work together. In this case, a development of two pre existent duos.
Quite often musicians from different sonic languages can be seen being put together, trying to push the artists to develop unexpected works. Vainio, Drumm, Dörner and Capece have mainly strong points in common, that have been executed in different contexts. The music map is generally divided into categories that are determined by it's most evident and often banal elements; if it has beats or not, if it is quiet or loud, if it has raw material or a carefully worked aesthetic. These four musicians have been working using all the previous elements, but these elements did not determine the music, they were used at the service of deeper ideas related to time and perception. How the sound of our environment can become music, how can music be attractive without telling a story, the work of sound in it's extreme: noise, granular and delicate, digital, electronic, instrumental extended techniques, preparations.

[2012] Helm - Impossible Symmetry

Impossible Symmetry is the third full length record by Helm, the project of London based artist Luke Younger. It marks a new chapter in the artists' canon as it's his first to be informed by live performance rather than studio experimentation. The recording and engineering was primarily a solo venture, with some technical assistance from John Hannon on a few tracks. Most of the compositions were created out of ideas / improvisations that were conceived in a live context and then fed back into the studio work. The album was recorded over the duration of a year in London with source material culled from acoustic sound sources in a similar methodology to his previous album 'Cryptography', whilst also simultaneously incorporating more extensive use of electronic elements and moments of rhythmic dark ambience recalling the outputs from early Coil and Cabaret Voltaire to even Traversable Wormhole's industrial minimalism.

[2012] TNGHT - TNGHT [EP]

Both Hudson Mohawke and Lunice have been working hard to solidify their place in the music world. Mohawke has been in the studio with Kanye West, Lunice has worked with Diplo, and both have contributed their musical chops to rising star Azealia Banks. With track records like that, it’s easy to understand why a collaboration between the two would elicit high expectations. Luckily, Mohawke and Lunice do not disappoint on their TNGHT EP.

[2012] Jacques Greene - Ready [EP]

While Montreal producer Jacques Greene's previous releases have been characterized by clubby, two-step send-ups of contemporary R&B, "Ready"-- the title track from his new EP on Martyn's 3024 label-- provides something different: A backdrop of terse, garage rhythms overlaid with Burial-level atmospherics. The novelty here is in the track's contrasts: The drums pummel while the vocal sample practically peels away into the fog. Somewhere in the middle are flashes of high-frequency synthesizer that shock both background and foreground into their respective corners. For a few years now, Greene has been flitting between mainstream and underground; "Ready" is a sign that he might be finding some hard, spooky place in between that he can call his own.

For those new to Blood Diamonds, Mike has been making a name for himself over the last few years.

[2012] Nguzunguzu - Warm Pulse [EP]

Pioneering dance label Hippos In Tanks are the new home of Nguzunguzu, who won a small following with their Timesup EP and two storming mixtapes. Anyone expecting the party to continue here is in for a shock: Ama Maroof and Daniel Pineda were never the most rational duo in bass music, hanging on the edge of the niche scene where dubstep meets psy-trance patches. This release forgoes the highs for experimentation, which might not be good news for the DJ but will mean a lot of software trainspotters now have to say En-Goo-Zoo En-Goo-Zoo.

[2012] Swans - The Seer

Swans have announced full details of their next studio album, The Seer. This record, described by Michael Gira as "the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made, been involved in or imagined", clocks in at two hours in length. What's more, it features a host of guest artists including Ben Frost, Karen O, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, members of Akron/Family, Grasshopper from Mercury Rev and (one imagines this will get many of you in a tizzy), former Swans member Jarboe on backing vocals and "voice collage". Michael Gira's full statement about The Seer reads as follows: "The Seer took 30 years to make. It’s the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made, been involved in or imagined. But it’s unfinished, like the songs themselves. It’s one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade. The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they’ll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while."

[NEWS] Evian Christ - Duga-three Mix

Excellent new mix of haunting original ambient music by UK producer Evian Christ, inspired by the Soviet Duga-3 transmitter. Via Dummy:
“Duga-three is a four-part piece of music I wrote after reading about a Soviet signal transmitter of the same name. it was characterised by the repetitive tapping sound it broadcast, which was sufficiently powerful enough to intercept transitions across the world. After 28 years of transmission, the Duga-3 array was abandoned as mysteriously and unexpectedly as it had appeared.”

[2012] Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - Mature Themes

West Coast natives Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti present Mature Themes, the follow-up to 2010’s hugely successful album, Before Today.
Before Today was the band’s 4AD debut, offering the first sign that the intriguingly scatalogical music Ariel had been making for over a decade was finally ossifying into a coherent form. Indeed, the lead song from Before Today - the inimitable ‘Round and Round’ - was awarded Pitchfork’s track of the year for 2010, and further plaudits were heaped upon the long player as it cropped up in near-all end-of-year polls. For many it seemed that Ariel had finally reached the wider audience his early recordings had hinted was possible. And with Mature Themes, Haunted Graffiti have forged a record that raises the bar once again.

[2012] VA - Strange Passion [Finders Keepers]

There's been a deluge of post-punk reissues and rarity compilations in the past five years, and in turning their spades to the same ground, Finders Keepers have dug way deeper than anybody else, and come up with a cache lost classics that are both truly lost and truly classic - the quality control alone is enough to distinguish this set from the mass of European "wave" re-runs. Compiled by Darren McCreesh, Strange Passion is in fact dedicated to "Irish post punk DIY and electronic music 1980-83", a geographic and historical microfocus which makes the wealth of innovative, energetic material contained within all the more remarkable. The most well-known act featured is probably Virgin Prunes, whose 'Twenty Tens (I've Been Smoking All Night)' is a clattering, riotous delight, a bit of a contrast to the more strung-out, gothic material that they're best known for. Dogmatic Element's 'Strange Passion' is just incredible - percussive female-fronted garage-punk that fits into the Raincoats-Headcoatees continuum, while Chant!Chant!Chant!'s 'Play Safe' sounds like The Birthday Party gone crust-punk. The second half of the comp explores weirder textures, showcasing the faux-naive cosmic pop of Operating Theatre and Choice, the eerie drum machine punk-funk of Stano, the minimal synth dirging of The Peridots and the exquisitely twee, utopian electronics of SM Corporation. As far as we can tell, pretty much all of this stuff is culled from ultra-rare 7"s that you couldn't get hold of even if you had a spare grand in your pocket, so don't miss this opportunity to acquaint yourself with the Irish arm of the independent music boom that keeps on giving. Absolutely storming stuff, thoroughly recommended.

[NEWS] Planningtorock "Patriarchy Over and Out"

On August 1, Planningtorock's Janine Rostron plays the Southbank Centre in London as part of Antony's Meltdown Festival. The line-up represents Anthony's "Future Feminism" approach, in which he and the group of New York City artists with whom he associates himself "reject patriarchy in its myriad virulent and apocalyptic manifestations, [advocating] for a fundamental shift towards feminism in all our systems and structures of governance." Rostron's new single, "Patriarchy Over and Out", is the epitome of the beat to which Antony marches. And what a beat: the first single to be released on Rostron's DFA imprint, Human Level, initially sticks so tightly to the grid that it's as if someone sent an electronic charge up a pristine chickenwire fence, crackling, hissing and buzzing in threatening fashion. It's militantly precise, and Rostron's masculine, operatic demands are cold and mantra-like: "I don't want to wait/ Patriarchal life, you're out of date/ Patriarchal life, get out of the way." Three-quarters of the way through the song, the grid melts away to a rueful glow, and Rostron's vocals become more emotional, more human and imploring. It's as if the song strips away a common perception of feminism-- exacting and militant-- to show the basic human cry for equality beneath. A deeply persuasive, beautiful single.

[NEWS] Inga Copeland – “B.M.W.”

Inga Copeland returns with a new solo track, apparently taken from a forthcoming 12″: “B.M.W.” is a cleaner, more accessible (relatively speaking) pop jam than we’re used to from the confounding Hype Williams crew, although shades of Black Is Beautiful’s haunting and hypnotic mutant bass/dub/reggae/soul still lurk in the shadows. Look for Copeland’s Faith 12″, “out soon.”
