While Montreal producer Jacques Greene's previous releases have been characterized by clubby, two-step send-ups of contemporary R&B, "Ready"-- the title track from his new EP on Martyn's 3024 label-- provides something different: A backdrop of terse, garage rhythms overlaid with Burial-level atmospherics.
The novelty here is in the track's contrasts: The drums pummel while the vocal sample practically peels away into the fog. Somewhere in the middle are flashes of high-frequency synthesizer that shock both background and foreground into their respective corners. For a few years now, Greene has been flitting between mainstream and underground; "Ready" is a sign that he might be finding some hard, spooky place in between that he can call his own.
