[2012] The Soft Moon - Zeros

Exhilarating sophomore album from the neo cold wave vanguard. Lest we forget, Luis Vasquez's self titled 2010 debut as The Soft Moon was one of that year's finest, ranking highly in end of year lists by Fact, Wire magazine, The Quietus, and ourselves; a flawless revitalisation of early '80s post-punk and wave music's choicest memes. Arguably, 'Zeros' surpasses that LP in bounds, knuckling down to a seething, vicious blend of industrial strength 4AD/Joy Division basslines, butterfly-knifed guitar chops and leather-bound beats played with shark-eyed fervor and seared under arcing, apocalyptic synth skies. In classic style it was mostly written on the road while touring in support of his debut as a five piece band.

[2012] Demdike Stare - Elemental [UPDATE]

As promised, Demdike Stare collect their 'Elemental' album to a double-disc edition, and as warned, it's a morphed beast, comprising alternate versions and additional material in bleakest post-industrial fashion. Arguably this is their finest work to date, the result of two heads realising their ambition without compromise and in a typically enigmatic, shadowy way. By sonic sleight of hand, the smoke and mirrors effect of the sound design is potently disorienting, suspending our disbelief with masterfully immersive results. Each new scene or "cue" is rendered with meticulous attention to detail and mise en scene as to enhance the album's labyrinthine effect. But, it's what isn't revealed that leaves most to the imagination, keeping listeners guessing 'til the bitter, and when rendered/blended with such expansive, textured nuance, there are dark corners and ghostly snags which only reveal themselves after repeated listens, collaring us like a movie you've watched for the umpteenth time only to notice something startlingly new that's been there all along...

[2012] Thought Broadcast - Emergency Stairway

Following a recent release on the reactivated Olde English Spelling Bee, California artist Ravi Binning lands on Editions Mego. That he's found a place on two such extreme and exacting rosters gives you some hint of the crafty, almost occult power of his junkshop electronic experiments. This is really grotty, lo-fi stuff, rooted in the murk of late 70s industrial, dub and even, reckon Mego, "a twisted form of Aktionism". Though there are several contemporary artists who share Binning's aesthetic orientation, few can be said to go about their business so uncompromisingly - in terms of polish and accessibility, Emergency Stairway makes Ekoplekz sound like Toto by comparison.

Tracklist:
01 Conflict Dub 4:02
02 Orgone Theater 2:16
03 03.18.2012 2:37

[2012] Aaron Dilloway & Jason Lescalleet - Grapes and Snakes

Grapes and Snakes' is the first collaborative work of two of the most respected American underground experimental/noise artists: Aaron Dilloway and Jason Lescalleet. Using purely analog synths and tape manipulation, they build a foggy psychoacoustic mass that lies somewhere between dynamic yet patiently treated tape-music and industrial howl. Dilloway has been releasing and recording music since the age of 16 and is a former guitarist and tape manipulator for the experimental band Wolf Eyes and also runs the noise record label, record store and mailorder Hanson Records. Jason Lescalleet's soundworld, meanwhile, occupies a space between noise, contemporary composition, and minimal electronics.

Tracklist:
A Shattered Capsules 19:47
B Burning Nest 19:35

[2012] Moon Pool & Dead Band - Human Fly [12'']

Detroit deviants Moonpool & Dead Band hardwire their gutter disco waveforms with all the slime lab atmospherics and sci-fi circuitry scuzz that you might expect (and hope for) from a duo comprised of veteran garage-punk drummer Dave Shettler and Wolf Eye noise lifer Nate Young. Utilizing a swap meet’s worth of crusty synths, sequencers, drum machines, and outmoded FX units, and adhering to a purist’s regimen of “all live + improvised, no overdubs,” MP & DB’s rogue wizard approach to basement beat music has birthed some refreshingly unclassifiable tunnel-rat techno (see their self-titled 12” on Agitated for proof), but Human Fly feels like their unambiguous highlight to date.

Tracklist:
01. Human Fly
02. Jagged Orbit
03. Cyber Rebels

[2012] Vatican Shadow - September Cell [12'']

Catharsis is a common theme running through all of Dominick Fernow's work. But where Prurient has long afforded him the opportunity to wrench a weight of personal shit off his chest, his recent Vatican Shadow project has, impressively, already expressed more in a far shorter space of time.

[2011] Christian Cosmos - Enthronement By God as the First-Born of the Dead

Dark, deadly and squashed electronic doom from Dominick Fernow, aka Vatican Shadow on this limited edition Hospital Productions vinyl pressing** Deadly electronic doom and drum machine edits from Dominick Fernow (Vatican Shadow/Prurient) in his Christian Cosmos guise. This project originally started out as collusion between Fernow and his long-time collaborator and Hospital Productions studio overseer, Kris Lapke. But The project is no basically Fernow solo and can be considered a side project to Vatican Shadow, both aesthetically, and philosophically (theologically?). Laboured drum machines toil bone-grinding rhythms, synths spurt purifying fire and everything feels irredeemably burned out and gutted, exactly how we like it. Highly recommended!

Tracklist:
01 Behold, A Sower Went Out To Sow
02 And As He Sowed, Some Seed Fell By The Wayside
03 And The Birds Came And Devoured Them
04 Some Fell On Stony Places
05 Where They Did Not Have Much Earth
06 Immediately Sprang Up Because They Had No Depth Of Earth
07 But When The Sun Was Up They Were Scorched
08 And Because They Had No Root They Withered Away
09 And Some Fell Among Thorns
10 And The Thorns Sprang Up And Choked Them
